VLOG 500 Words
Vlog 500
Words
For our 3rd
year of university we had to make a final year project we decided to make a
film called our anniversary which is a psychological thriller about a man who
loses his wife and at the height of his grief he kidnaps a woman who looks like
his wife and Dominic has to make an extremely hard choice for the film I was
the production sound supervisor it was my job to record and edit the sound in
the film. But before we did our film, we had to write a 2,500-word report on
our job role and what unique aspect of that job role we would bring or try
to bring to the film.
In my essay I tried to make the point of how atmosphere and
silence builds and creates tension throughout movies I specifically looked at
psychological thrillers as well as horror movies the main movies I was trying
to take inspiration were films like seven and silence of the lambs because I
felt these films were masterclasses in creating tension and atmosphere and as
the point I was trying to make was these films has good use of silence and
atmosphere. It also has excellent sound design and good music. However
unfortunately, my essay was very much all over the place and I wasn’t clear in
my aim and so it made my aim to the teachers seem confusing.
When I got to set I used radio
mikes a 633 for multichannel recording and an mkh30/40 left and right stereo
sided microphone I wanted to try and emphasize long takes of the atmosphere in both
our locations I wanted to do this as a lot of the film takes place in one house
and wanted to emphasize the tension between the two main characters. I did a 5-minute
recording in the interior location and a 3-minute forest scene ambiance. When it
came to how the people edited the film, unfortunately, I could not use the
long ambiance and atmosphere take as much as we wanted due to the fact the film could only be 10 minutes long and we had to use other sounds. What also
didn’t help was there was an incessant buzzing noise which affected some of the dialogue takes we had to spend time to editing and it meant I couldn’t really
use what I wrote about my essay.
So Overall throughout this project
I have learned a lot throughout this process. Including about what a sound
supervisor does and all the various job roles that includes. I also learned
about all the unique things that a sound supervisor does and what sort of
unique angle they take when they record the sound. While I was able to
accomplish the long takes on set it ultimately could not be used in the film
due to how weird it would have sounded in the final edit also it would have
messed up the flow of the scene and it would have not worked. But
overall, I learned a lot about what unique angle there is to take on set and
should have implemented it better. I Learned a lot from doing this project and
will implement it better when doing other projects in the future.
